Payce Halligan is nearly dead -- comatose, at the least -- when she disappears from her hospital room with no clue where she's gone. Even as he searches for his missing partner, Gavin McAllister must deal with a new, 'temporary' and hostile partner and rival for Payce, a seductive journalist, and the return of the deadly cult The New Creation.

EXCERPT

"What happened?" Gavin kicked off the wall as Georgene emerged from Payce's room with a weak, but still present, smile. "Is she alright?" He scanned her face for uncertainty.

"Believe it or not, yes. I thought she was gone for sure. Chalk it up to modern medical science."

"It sounded as if you were blasting cement. The whole building rocked. What did you do?"

"I took a major chance on a new machine that disrupts the body/brain functions. It forces resets of the organ systems. It's something akin to rebooting a computer. Until a few minutes ago, it was all theory. Now it's reality. You can't beat advances." Georgene smiled again.

"But she's okay?"

"Pffft! She's better than before. She's breathing on her own and from the current holograph, I'd say all systems are 'go.'"

"Oh, thank God. Georgene I could kiss you!"

"Do you see me objecting, Detective?"

He grabbed her face and planted a smack on her lips.

"There! And thank you again. I was about to pull my gun and eat it."

"Well, we're all alive and happy now, especially your partner. But you should know something. This was not an accident or malfunction. Somebody cut the life support system."

"What?"

"S'true Gavin. That's what caused her to code out. We caught it literally in the nick of time. A few minutes more and there would have been no hope of resuscitation." Georgene didn't smile.

"For what reason? We've wrapped the case and no one's threatened anything."

Georgene gave him a patronizing smile. "That's your department, Detective. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got my other department to oversee."

"Thanks again, Georgene. You pulled off a miracle."

"Don't thank me, thank technical advances. But you're welcome."

"Can I see her?"

"Well, you can but I don't know if she'll be conscious enough to realize you're there. Make it short, will you? I want to give her time to re-stabilize completely."

"Right. I'll see you then." He turned and pushed open the door.

*****

"Payce?" he whispered in her ear. "Payce, can you hear me?" Gavin leaned over her several long moments before he reached out and ran a finger softly over her brow, careful not to disturb the holographic image hovering above her. It didn't look right somehow. She shouldn't be lying with things sticking out of her. Her pastel blue eyes should be gazing at him and laughing. He obeyed a sudden impulse and leaned closer, giving her a light kiss on her cool forehead. Even with all the hospital accoutrements, she still smelled soapy sweet. She looked small and vulnerable on the bed, smaller than he even realized and he vowed to never let anything harm her again.

"If -- when -- you come out of this, I'm going to keep you near me even if I have to handcuff you," he said, squeezing her hand. Then he straightened and backed away toward the chair where he'd spent several nights.

"Yeah, that'll make the bad guys respect us." Gavin's head snapped up. Had he really heard Payce's voice say that? He stared at Payce. She hadn't moved.

Maybe you should go home, McAllister. You're starting to hallucinate. This is just wishful thinking. You wish she were out of here. You wish she were at home with you. He shoved the image away and pressed it down with a massive effort. Home? It isn't your home, McAllister. It belongs to Payce. Not you and Payce. Just Payce. You don't have a home, remember?

He pushed that thought away, too. Gavin didn't want to remember his home, didn't want to think about anything but Payce lying helpless in front of him, wishing her back to health with all his strength.

"Barrington pens a pulse-pounding sequel that will keep the reader on the edge of a precipice with Miraculous Deception, Book Two in the Future Imperfect Series...Barrington goes from thrill to thrill with ease... Miraculous Deception is a worthy, edgy sequel to Crucifying Angel."

Stephanie - Classic Romance Revival Reviews
Rating = 4 Wings

"Barrington's 3-dimensional characters are so realistic; they practically jump off the page...Miraculous Deception is a good old fashion, edge-of-your-seat, suspense thriller that delivers all the unpredictable, fast-paced action of a runaway train!"

Brenda Scott - Associated Content Reviews

"P. I. Barrington pens a suspense full of futuristic gadgets in a United States that seems on the brink of total collapse. People will do just about anything for money just to survive. Character building is excellent... Barrington writes well and keeps us guessing about how this will end. The cliff hanger at the end is as good as any done in series TV or in books. Readers may want to read all of the books close together for better continuity but this is a great look at future possibilities with lots of suspense."
