Elise Wells travels to Santa Fe, New Mexico, for her mother's funeral and to investigate her death. She needs to find out what really happened to her mother, and if someone killed her -- who?
Elise's guilt overwhelms her because she didn't come when her mother needed her. She determines to make up for judging her and for alienating herself for so long. All the while, she fights her growing attraction to Ramon Castillo... a man she's not sure she can even trust.
After several 'accidents', Elise realizes someone is trying to run her off, or kill her, before the reading of her mother's will. What is the secret the Castillo family will go to any lengths to hide?
EXCERPT
Remembering why she had come, Elise turned toward him. But out of the corner of her eye, she glimpsed a flight of steps at the far end of the room. She glanced up, on a whim.
Ramón's eyebrows rose. "Curious?"
"Always." She followed him up the individually carpeted steps.
Ceesco yipped at being left behind, drawing their attention.
"Uh-oh, these steps are scary to one so small. Come on, little one."
Ceesco moved up one step at a time, until he reached Ramón. Then he reached up a paw, beseechingly, and Ramón picked him up to continue up the steps. At the top, he set the dog down.
"My studio," he said. The beauty she had just seen downstairs made a sharp contrast with the stark, rough-hewn tables stretched along the walls. Ramón had not attempted to create order here.
However the sculptures more than made up for the workroom's clutter.
"They're magnificent." Elise looked around her. One table held statues created from various materials. Some were molded from clay, and some carved from wood. Some bronze figures stood among them. There was no discernable theme. On the floor stood statues of human figures as well as animals. There were also gargoyles that looked like they might fit on a garden wall. "You're really good." It was less a compliment than an acknowledgment of an irrefutable fact.
"I have a God-given talent. I just use it."
Elise, surprised by his answer, turned away. She noticed a coarse cloth covering a form on one of the tables. So it wouldn't dry out, she supposed.
"These are different. What are they?" Elise pointed to several crude clay models, dogs, cats, an elephant and some unidentifiable animals. Despite their primitive appearance, they all had a lifelike look. "They're not yours."
"My -- a -- student did them."
Elise's gaze swept the room. "They're all beautiful."
She looked up to find Ramón staring at her, an odd gleam in his eyes. Her throat tightened and she felt light-headed and short of breath. He stood close, so close his breath warmed on her forehead. She tipped her head back to look him in the eye, but as she parted her lips to speak, he abruptly wrapped her in his arms and crushed her to him, his mouth covering hers in a heated kiss that made her head swim.
A tumult built in her and she returned his embrace, eager for his touch. A wild excitement surged through her. At the same time, she was angry at herself for feeling about him the way she did. She knew she should resist him, but she craved his ardor -- she exulted in it.
Ramón suddenly released her, pulling back, leaving her swaying in his wake. He smiled down at her, an ironic, tight-lipped smile.
Elise gasped.
"From the grotesque masked face in the upper window of the Castillo de los Castillos to the terrifying climax and on to the very satisfying finish, Secrets of Old Santa Fe kept me on the edge of my seat. Marion Bullock's debut novel is a winner and I eagerly await her next offering."

"Secrets of Old Santa Fe is a "feel good" mystery. It has secrets, old folk lore splashed with some romantic undertones and even jealousy thrown into the mix. The descriptions of the scenery make this North Eastern girl want to visit the Southwest to enjoy the splendor of it all. I look forward to reading more of this author's work in the future."

"I just finished reading Secrets of Old Santa Fe by Marion Kelley Bullock. I couldn't put this book down. The last few chapters are riveting. If you like suffering heroines, and tall, dark, mysterious heroes woven together with other believable characters into an intriguing plot, this is a book you will enjoy. I especially liked the way the author used setting to create mood and atmosphere that gives a sense of, and feeling for, reality. Some of her descriptions are downright poetic."
