When a young woman is confronted with her feelings for her handsome new landlord, she realizes he may not be available. He keeps reappearing, but then two other interesting men enter her life to further confuse her and she is ready to give up all men and settle for life with her double-toed cat, Spud. Has God brought one of these men into her life to be her future husband, and if so -- which one?

Kristen, a lovely young college graduate, struggles to find employment and deal with her feelings of loneliness and rejection after her boyfriend drops her without explanation. Along comes a new landlord -- a handsome and successful realtor named Dave, who starts off on the wrong footing by restricting all pets from the premises. She will not give up her cat -- her faithful companion. A leaking toilet, a squeaking door, and a trip to the gym, all act as collision courses for the two who become good friends - or are they? Kristen soon finds herself facing a new crisis. Does she take back her old boyfriend, who has re-appeared, date a young lawyer who finds her fascinating, or wait for the man who appears to have other interests?

This is a fast, fun read. Romantic and a page-turner.

EXCERPT

After changing into old clothes and cleaning up from supper, she sat at the computer to check her e-mail. There was a knock on the door and in that instant she realized it was probably her new landlord. How could she have possibly forgotten he was coming by?

"Wait," she called out as she pushed her basket of folded clothes (topped with her unmentionables) into the bedroom and glanced in the mirror at her image. Oh, no, I look even worse than last time, she thought as she reached for the chain on her door. Dave stood there when she opened the door, waiting to be asked in.

"Oh, come on in. I just got home a little while ago. I'm afraid the place is a mess and--"

"It's fine. This won't take long." Dave opened up a binder and removed a pen from his pocket. "Did you make a list of problems?" With this, Spud made his first appearance, twisting his lanky body around and through Dave's legs. Dave looked down and then looked sternly into Kristen's eyes. "Of course, the cat will have to go."

"Then so will I! I've had my cat for four years, he's never had an accident, I keep the litter box clean, and he's like my child." The last three words came out a little shaky, but she used her most assertive glare.

Dave cracked a smile. "Goodness, you are a fiery one. You make a good case for yourself, but if I allow you to have a pet, everyone will want one."

"Just about everyone already has a pet, so you could end up with an empty apartment building, sir!"

"Perhaps, if everyone was willing to pay an extra security, then--"

"Most of the tenants would not be able to afford an extra security payment. May I call you Dave?" He nodded and she continued without a pause, "There is more to life than making money, you know. Sometimes we should do things to serve others."

"Like buy apartments to rent out free?" Dave asked, holding back a smile.

"Now you know that's not what I mean. But when you see people struggling just to make ends meet and many of them are old -- like your grandparents -- and they have a cute little puppy or cat that is like a child to them, well -- you just have to be considerate and make exceptions." She let out a long breath.

"I see. So, I should just let anybody have any kind of animal because they are old people and forget trying to make a little profit. Is that all? Do you want me to deliver dinner every night?"

"Oh, you're just being exasperating! You know that's not what I'm saying. If you don't allow animals, then you can expect I'll be giving my two month notice on the first and I'll bet you I won't be the only one."

"I wouldn't want you to have to move. Why don't I look around and see for myself whether your cat has done any damage and I'll check out the other tenants this week and make a decision regarding pets. I'm not trying to be mean. Really."

Kristen avoided eye contact and picked up Spud who started purring and licking her chin. She waved her arm around the room. "Feel free to look wherever. I'm afraid it's a little messy right now, but I do clean once a week."
