A ragged sigh escaped his lips. "Indi, I had no idea that coming back here would be so hard."
"What do you mean?"
"Now that I'm here, I don't want to leave. I feel like I'm at home, like I belong here. With you."
A tremor of delight coursed through her. Words had never been sweeter. If only she could trust that he belonged there and that he'd never leave her again. "Like you said, Chase, we're not the same people. Too much has happened. I'm not that same naïve girl anymore. I've learned to take care of myself. Had to. Gram had Alzheimer's and I had to make most of her decisions for the last five years."
"You always said you'd take care of them until they died."
"And I did. I keep my promises." India was unable to keep the sharp accusations out of her tone of voice and regretted it when a look of hurt flashed momentarily across his face.
"You're not the only one who's suffered tragedy. I lost my wife six months ago."
"You say it as calmly as if we're talking about the weather. Did you love her, Chase?"
"Of course I loved her, and now I feel guilty because I'm so happy to see you again." He took her hand and placed it between both of his. "I think I'm still in love with you."
Joy surged through her. Oh, how she loved him. She'd loved only him for as long as she could remember. Still, she couldn't open herself up to hurt again. "Maybe you just want what you can't have You'll never have me."
"Don't toy with me, India. Your mouth is telling me one thing, but the look in your eyes tells me something totally different."
She shrugged off his words. "You're welcome to stay above the barn as long as you want, but there'll be no more talk about us or the way things used to be."
He stood, pulled her to her feet, and grasped her by shoulders. "You're scared to death. I can see it in your eyes."
"I'm going to marry David."
"No you're not." Chase enunciated the words as if saying them slowly and sternly would make them true.
"Why not?" She raised her chin in defiance.
"Because you're a smart woman. You'll figure him out."
