A Green Beret captain, Garrett Jensen, has two great loves in life...one is his career, the other is his family. The continual demands--and absences--as the commander of a Special Ops unit become too much for his wife, Catherine, and although she will always love him, she files for divorce, wanting a normal and safe life for their girls. But danger, wrapped in the guise of Garrett's latest assignment, strikes too close to home, and husband and wife must team up again, against the deadly drug underworld, in order to save their children. Their enemies are within, and without, but which is which is the ultimate question.
EXCERPT
She stared at him, her eyes going wide, questions obvious in their green depths. "That was about the girls." Her voice, a whispered statement, begged for answers.
He couldn't lie to her. "Yes."
The color drained from her face.
Silence reigned throughout the room, and he watched as various emotions shifted across her expressive features. Fear. Anguish. Then finally, as comprehension dawned, anger. A cold, furious light lit her eyes, making her more beautiful than ever.
Then the questions came, fast and furious.
"Damn it, Garrett! It's about you, isn't it? Who took the girls? What do they want from you?"
He hesitated, knowing his answers would only infuriate her and put greater distance between them. Damn! It didn't make sense, why would they take my kids?
He racked his brain trying to find the right words, something that would ease her fears and gain her trust. He would need it now, more than ever, if they were to get through this together.
He took a step toward her. "Cathryn, I--" He stopped, at a loss for words.
She raced across the room to grab the phone from its hook.
"What are you doing?"
"Calling the police."
"No!" He snatched the phone from her hands. "We can't!" The wail of the ambulance could be heard as it turned down the street. He stared at Cathryn, letting his gaze plead his case; he had to handle this.
"What did they say Garrett?" Her tone was firm -- demanded answers.
He spoke in a slow, careful cadence, knowing he had only moments to make her understand. "They said not to involve the police. If we do, we'll never see the girls again. Please, Cathryn, let me get mom on her way to the hospital. Then I'll explain everything, I promise."
She stared at him, not answering for what seemed like hours, but in reality was nothing more than seconds. She finally nodded. "Okay. We'll play it your way for now. But so help me God, if anything happens to the girls, I will never forgive you."
"Neither will I," he whispered.
"...Deadly Obligations was a good book. I liked Cathryn and Garrett, and I enjoyed watching them learn to work together and rediscover their romance. I recommend Deadly Obligations to anyone looking for an intense military themed suspense."
