Looking for excitement, Jean Barbour added her name to the guest list of a charity affair at a fancy Palm Beach hotel. She pinned an old brooch onto a borrowed gown to preserve her modesty. Interpol agent Cort van Roy recognizes the gem as one reportedly stolen from an ancestor decades ago. In the same glance, he spots his nemesis, a ruthless jewel thief who would stop at nothing to get such a bauble.
EXCERPT
The gown was a shimmery deep blue, and the big stone in the pin had a yellow tinge, cut like a gumdrop and surrounded by a ring of rhinestones. They were faceted in the usual manner and remained as clearly white as ever.
The piece of jewelry went surprisingly well with the evening dress. Jean carefully studied the over-all effect in the mirror. Though she wasn't vain, she wanted to look her best in a room of high-class people. On the other hand, she didn't want to attract attention. Jean felt confident she could mingle unnoticed in a crowded ballroom -- until she couldn't take her eyes off one perfect specimen of manhood and had probably burned a hole in his back. He was just retaliating for her lack of manners with his absurd story about Great-grandmother Finney's pin being valuable.
Jean set her nearly empty champagne glass on the coffee table in front of her and stared at the opal on her index finger. It was from her mother's side of the family, as was the other ring. Jean's family had never been able to afford expensive jewelry. The noise that came from her throat was disgruntled and puzzled. Maybe... maybe the man was right. All the pieces were old, very old. That was probably why they were valuable.
