Joanna Sharpe begins her teaching career believing she can move mountains by herself. But some of her emotionally and mentally challenged students stymie her. So does Rob Thomas, father of one of her students. How should she handle his interest? And what about James, a student who insists his brother is trying to kill him? Is he really in danger? Also, who is trying to kill her or at least frighten her to death? As she tries to equip her students to succeed in the world, she realizes she must appreciate their baby steps, instead of expecting instant transformation. And in the climax, when all their lives are at stake, a lot of heroes emerge.

EXCERPT

She stretched out full length on the couch, and Oreo moved instinctively to lie on her stomach. Joanna cupped her hand over his little pointed face and felt the small puffs of his breath. Soothed by his purring, she dozed.

When she opened her eyes, she felt relaxed. Amazing how a small nap had released her from the tedium of her work. She wished she could stay at home and read a good book or watch an old movie. If only she hadn't agreed to go out.

Looking through her closet, Joanna picked out a bittersweet cotton sweater to wear with her beige pants. She wore tan flats. Gold hoop earrings and a gold circlet bracelet completed her costume. If it really was casual, she'd be okay. If not, she'd feel like a fool.

When she walked through the hall into the living room, Oreo met her and started running toward the kitchen and back in a suggestive way. "I just fed you," Joanna said. But she followed the cat and fed him again. It had been three hours. She picked up her handbag off the coffee table and stepped out the front door. The Mustang, which she'd parked out front, since she planned to go out again, started immediately. If only it would do that mornings.

Joanna had no trouble finding the house. It stood in a row of small brick homes on Mockingbird. The peach-colored trim looked welcoming, and Joanna suddenly felt glad she had come. The mood continued as Bert met her at the door and introduced her to his wife.

Hazel's smile warmed her, and the delicious aromas wafting through the house made her feel right at home.

"Let me help," Joanna offered, and Hazel led her to the kitchen.

"You can put ice in the glasses," Hazel directed. "I've got everything else ready. Just have to dish up the spaghetti."

"You have one child?" There were only four glasses and Joanna thought there should be five. She'd seen pictures of a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old boy and a younger looking girl on the piano.

"No," Hazel said. "We have two, a boy and a girl. But they're not here. We farmed them out for the evening." Then she noticed Joanna's attention on the four glasses. "Oh, that," she said. "Actually, we invited another--"

The doorbell rang and Joanna's attention was drawn away from Hazel and what she was saying. Ah, yes, matchmaking, the very thing she tried to avoid. The main reason she had learned to turn down dinner invitations from her couple friends. Suddenly the warm euphoric feeling that had begun when she first entered the living room evaporated, leaving her tense and watchful. She felt like a piece of yard goods in Murphy's Department Store back home. One table always held remnants. Joanna had searched through them several times, but she was always disappointed. They were either too small and insignificant to be of much worth or they looked ugly. Right now, Joanna felt like that.

"I hope it's okay?" Hazel asked, eyeing her anxiously. "We thought you'd like to meet people, being new and all."

"Sure," Joanna said. She smiled, determined to make the best of a bad situation.

In the dining room, she saw how awful her predicament actually was. Even from the back, the dark-haired man looked familiar. Something about the arrogance of his stance. Then he turned, and Joanna found herself looking once again into the dark mesmeric eyes of Elizabeth's father.
