Jerrah believed she had spent the past year healing from grief and tragedy, finding solace in secluded campgrounds and the quiet companionship of her dog Mocha. Her solitude is suddenly broken when she walks into Cal, a local rancher. After the accidental intimacy of impact, Jerrah discovers her ankle has been re-injured and she is now dependant on this stranger and his two sons.
While staying at Cal's ranch, long buried emotions are reawakened. Her sense of family and the bonds of friendship have her moving to the rhythm of ranch life. Cal’s boys start calling her mom, and she starts a surprising relationship with an abused horse. She spends time teaching the horse to trust again, but can she teach herself?
EXCERPT
Jerrah sat on the table looking around the room. There was nothing retro about the paneling on the wall, it was definitely original. Other than the age of the decor and equipment, it looked about like any other X-ray room she had ever been in.
She wondered about asking the doctor for help. Asking the sheriff hadn't worked.
A young girl wearing a pink t-shirt and lots of jewelry came bouncing through the door, interrupting her thoughts. "Hi, I'm Laura. Slide your leg over this way a little and I'll get started. This won't take long. I already had everything set up. I'm not usually in here on Saturdays, but we figured with the rodeo today there was a good chance somebody would need an X-ray before the day was out." Laura picked up a clipboard and asked Jerrah for her full name.
While the girl positioned Jerrah's leg and adjusted the machine, she talked. She was obviously not shy. "So, how long have you known Cal? Isn't he just gorgeous? I'm not usually into older men, but for someone like him I'd consider making an exception."
"I don't know him at all, we just ran into each other at the rodeo."
"Really? I thought since you were wearing the McFerren brand you knew him pretty well."
"The what?"
Laura pointed to the logo on the shirt Jerrah was wearing. "That's the McFerren brand. It's been used at the Sundown Ranch for generations. How'd you hurt your ankle?"
"Cal and I literally ran into each other at the rodeo. We fell. I twisted my ankle and ruined my shirt. He loaned me this one."
"Where are you from? I don't remember ever seeing you before."
"I'm on vacation from Indiana." Jerrah said, then thought if Laura didn't mind asking so many questions maybe she would be as open to answering a few. "Do you know Cal well?"
"I've known him all my life. His son TJ and I were born in the same hospital on the same day. We both just turned twenty last month. Where are you staying? With this ankle you're going to be laid up awhile"
"Cal seems to think I'm going to stay at his ranch."
"Really? Wow! You'll be the envy of every woman in the county. I don't think there's a woman within a hundred-mile radius that hasn't dreamed of spending time on that ranch. Those over twenty-five because of Cal, Garret, and Jeff and those under twenty-five because of Reece and TJ. You are so lucky."
"I'm not looking to get lucky." Jerrah replied sarcastically.
"This is one beautiful book... The chemistry between them is apparent right from the beginning. While the chemistry does not have a lot of sexual undertones to it, it is full of romance. When they aren’t being all sweet on each other, Cal and Jerrah are arguing because their relationship is full of passion and their chemistry is so strong. All in all, this was a fun read full of great characters and an entertaining story..."
"August in Montana is a heartwarming love story with a delightful cast of characters that will steal your heart... August in Montana is a multilayered story with vibrant and three dimensional characters. Strong family ties, a sweet romance and poignant moments keep the reader fully engaged in this charming novel by newcomer Kandi Jaynes."
"Want to escape this weekend? Pick up August in Montana and immerse yourself in Jerrah Jacob's life. You won't be disappointed. This tender, heart-felt story will make you laugh out loud, cry, and tingle..."
"It was easy to get caught up in the story line. I highly recommend this book. You won't want to put it down once you start. Can't wait for more books from Kandi. I absolutely love her sense of humor."
"August in Montana is an excellent read. A modern cowboy romance, the dialog managed to make me laugh out loud more than once. It also has some very tender moments and great imagery for a romance. Highly recommended."
"August in Montana is a romance with all the right ingredients. The sexy hero, the heroine you cheer for and it's set on a Montana ranch. I absolutely fell in love with the whole McFerren clan. We know that Jerrah is suffering but not why. I loved how you unraveled the mystery of her sadness. It's a must read for all modern western romance fans. I'm looking forward to more novels written by Kandi Jaynes!"
"August in Montana by Kandi Jaynes, copyright May 2011, published by Desert Breeze Publishing, Inc. is original, creative, heartwarming, and not your typical horse and dog story... loved this story because it was unique, creative, and original, and I look forward to reading more novels by Kandi Jaynes."
"This story was so touching and moving without being saturated with angst and melodrama, and with some of the backstory and history of these characters, it would have been easy for the author to fall into that trap. Instead, this story was a beautiful telling of a woman opening her heart again to a man (and his sons) any woman would have a hard time resisting. And as much as I loved the growth, development and final conclusion of this story... I couldn't help think... Do I have to let go here?... Here's hoping this is a gentle nudge in the author's direction. * wagging eyebrows * What do you think, Ms. Jaynes?"
