How do YOU rate this book? Less than a year earlier, Kellie Masterson’s life was perfect. Then she discovered the ugly truth. Her marriage to Davis Jackson had been built on a myth. When Kellie prayed without seemingly having answers, the only thing left for her to do was put distance between herself and Davis.
Now, with nowhere else to turn, Kellie returns to Jackson, Texas only to discover, Davis hasn’t moved with his life as she suspected. And he never signed the divorce papers she believed he couldn’t wait to get. On top of all this, Davis doesn’t seem the same person he was before. The rough edges of his personality are gone.
Soon, Kellie learns that Davis had a fateful car accident six months earlier that made him question everything about himself and his drinking. Coming close to death changed him. But Kellie isn’t ready to trust him completely just yet. She needs time. She moves into her grandmother’s old house close by and finds a job. Soon she and Davis are attending the same church they were married in together. They’re becoming friends again. But Kellie doesn’t know how to tell him she has secrets of her own.
EXCERPT
The snow started just outside of Angel Fire, New Mexico and it had followed her all the way to the Texas border. There, the inviting white snowflakes promptly turned to hard and foreboding bullets of sleet. When Kellie Masterson turned off I-40 onto the county road that dissected the downtown section of Jackson, Texas, the windshield wipers of her battered old SUV could no longer keep up with the onslaught of ice.
Another five miles. Almost there.
Almost home.
The further she drove, the more the tiny Outback skidded along glassy pavement. October thirty-first was too early in the year for sleet in Texas.
She'd checked the weather carefully before leaving Denver. The storm had taken everyone by surprise. Snow she could handle, ice was another danger entirely.
Kellie slowed the SUV's speed to a crawl. At this time of the year, darkness descended quickly over the Texas horizon. There wasn't another soul in sight. Not the place to lose control.
It had been almost a year since Kellie spent her last night here in Jackson. Still, she couldn't think about that night and Davis' betrayal and not want to fall apart. She couldn't fall apart. She'd done that enough already. She was barely hanging on.
Memories, both bitter and sweet, washed over her like a driving snowstorm as she drove the familiar terrain. Her grandmother hadn't lived here in more than a year, the house she'd once cherished had sat abandoned all that time, and yet it seemed as if nothing had really changed in a year accept for Kellie herself.
Funny, she was the one who'd clung to her grandmother and Jackson while Davis couldn't wait to shake the Texas dust from his boots.
She barely remembered the naive woman she'd been when a childhood crush turned to love and the man she adored made all of her dreams seem possible just by asking her to marry him.
Kellie forced those memories back to the dark recesses of her mind and made another circle around the town square.
Just let go. Let God take it.
She couldn't think about Davis now or she'd lose the tiny bit of courage she was clinging to, turn the car around, and head back to Denver. To the empty life she'd left there.
Father, please help me stay strong.
It didn't matter she'd lost her teaching job two weeks earlier, her savings had dwindled to nothing, and she'd come close to being homeless. All those things would be a welcomed fate compared to facing Davis again. Not that she needed to worry any. By now, Davis would have sold the ranch and moved on with his life. With any luck, she'd never have to face him -- or their past.
