At a Governor's Ball in Austin, Texas, True Lee Cameron meets suave Sam Deleon. Before the night is out, she transforms from the coddled and protected younger sister to a woman in love. Reality crashes down when she accidentally learns her new husband has deceived her. Daring to disobey him, she follows Sam to the oilfields and determines to live wherever he does. Has she made a mistake? Will she give up and return home where she can make her own rules?
EXCERPT
Sam lowered his head in his hands. "I loved Rita, but she was too far removed from me and the rest of the family. I couldn't help her." He raised his head with sorrow and pain reflected in his eyes. "I gave her a Christian burial, although the women and the madam in the Flats did all the work. But God bless them, everyone wanted a part in the service for Rita. It seems all the women liked and admired her, and wanted the best for her."
"The Flats. Damn, True, you saw all that?" He lowered his head and rubbed his forehead. When he looked up, he asked, "How did you get here?"
"Adam Carter vol--"
"What? What the hell?" Sam yelled at her. Not one person in her entire life had ever raised his voice to her, and the act angered her as nothing else ever had. She hadn't known he was capable of such vehemence.
She pointed her finger at him. "Don't talk to me in that raised voice and tone, Samuel Deleon. I will not tolerate it."
He leaned back in the chair, gazing at her with a bewildered look on his face. In a soft voice, he asked, "Why did you come here?"
She pulled a camp stool close to talk face-to-face. Placing her hand on his knee, she said, "I came to be with you, Sam. I got lonely, and your mother very adamantly stated the children must not be near her. The only alternative was to move back to my house and keep them there. After thinking, though, I believed it would be the wrong thing to do. Perhaps I could have taken them to the ranch. Lord knows, Mama and Papa would welcome them with open arms. But that didn't seem right, Sam. I've always gone to them for everything, but I'm a married woman, not a helpless child. So, I decided the only solution was to live with you, and hope we could rear your sister's children together."
Leaning forward, he took her hands in his. "Well, yes, maybe we can. But True, you can't stay here. You simply cannot. It's too difficult. You're not used to this life. It's dirty and hot and very strenuous. You can't cope with all this."
"But other women do. I've already met Cora Mae and Lurene and Mrs. Korff and Sarah. And, oh yes, Hazel." She laughed.
He gave her hands a little shake. "But they're hardy pioneer stock. You're the boarding school miss. I cannot allow it. Go back. In the morning, pack up, and go back."
"No."
"No?"
"No."
"This sweet western romance deftly captured the flavor and pioneering spirit of those rowdy times in South Texas. This story is a mesmerizing tale of a beautiful, affluent young woman caught up in an unexpected web of deceit, who rather than whine and complain about the situation, sets a course which will ultimately reward those closest to her with a bounty of unexpected blessings. I enjoyed this well-written, obviously lovingly researched tale about a woman who stood by her man and spoke her mind, though usually in a gentle and gracious manner. This is a beautiful, uplifting story that is sure to lovingly ensnare women of all ages."
