EXCERPT

The gryphon struggled to climb in the air. "You should have left when I warned you," Taraly told the beast. "If for some reason you live to return to your master, tell him humans are no longer easy prey for his puppets." She closed her eyes to stop the spinning. If she continued to communicate with the beast she knew her spirit would be forever tainted from the ugliness seeping in.

"I shall kill you."

Taraly stepped out of the trees, sword posed for attack. "Here I am." She broke the lines so the beast couldn't reply in words. The bears continued toward them, the newcomers released volley after volley of arrows, and the animals in the sky were relentless in their attack.

"No," Valpsky screamed kicking his horse in the ribs.

The beast swung its eagle head in the direction of the soldier's cry. Taraly ran forward, leaping into the air. The sword found a home in the gryphon's breast. She gripped the caramel brown fur and withdrew the blade only to sink it again a few inches from its original home. The gryphon screamed in pain.

The deep growl of a wolfhound sounded from her left. She glanced over her shoulder as a blur of black fur leapt toward her. Releasing her grip, she dropped to the ground, turning to face the new attacker. The gryphon shrieked as the wolfhound's teeth sank into its throat.

"Queen Taraly," Valpsky shouted, his strong fingers pulling her back. "You are true royalty. Never listen to anyone and do as you please." He pushed her aside and swung his sword, slicing the gryphon's front left leg.

Taraly regained her balance. "It seems you have forgotten the proper way to speak to your queen," she spat and leapt forward, driving her sword into the gryphon's lion underbelly.

"Please forgive me if I lack proper court etiquette while battling a monster and keeping you from being killed." Valpsky tackled her, covering her body with his. Taraly swallowed her reprimand as the cruel talons dropped down toward them.

A young man jumped over them, swinging a thick walking stick. The crack of bones breaking filled the air. A small nomad woman leapt onto Valpsky's back. Her knives moved so quickly they were mere flashes in the sunlight. The claws fell to the grass around Taraly.

The nomad jumped to the ground and Taraly heard the faint tinkle of bells. The gryphon's blood sprayed over all of them as it struggled to climb back into the sky. Valpsky rolled off her and pulled her to her feet.

Taraly picked up her sword.

"The thing is dying." The young man spoke with a slight accent. As if on cue the creature fell from the sky.

"Leave the world you know behind and join the quest for the Scepter of Hope. Ms. Romaney has created an enchanting world filled with magic, fantastic creatures, and wonderful characters... I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Hollow King, but I must warn readers that this book ends at a pivotal moment that leaves readers hanging until the next book in the series comes out. I have become so wrapped up in the characters and their quest, that I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment. Readers who enjoy a great fantasy with a touch of romance won’t want to miss this book."
