A young woman stood on the bottom step of the stairway. Shadows veiled her face and tangled in her long, luxuriant curls. Moonbeams danced and shimmered against the glitter of her gown. She smiled and lifted one slim hand to brush a stray strand of hair from her brow. That innocuous movement sent another shiver of fear sliding down Myra's backbone.
The young woman took a step in Myra's direction. Her slippers made a scuffing sound as she moved.
What mystical being had the power to shuffle down a stairway and into a room as if she was a corporeal being? Myra pulled her quilt up around her breasts. "How did you get here?"
"I never left," The young woman said. Her voice was soft and melodic, like water rippling over smooth stones. "May I come nearer?"
This thing, this person, Myra decided, not knowing how she had come to that knowledge, was a fantasy, an illusion that had wandered into a world not made for her. That sudden insight brought sure awareness. "You're Clara."
